AirPods Support & Troubleshooting
One earbud gone quiet, a mic no one can hear, or a case that won't charge? Here's independent, no-nonsense help for your AirPods.
AirPods are tiny, so small things — a bit of earwax, a low case battery, a stale Bluetooth link — cause most of the trouble. The fixes are usually just as small once you know them. Below are the areas Helprix helps with most; if yours are misbehaving in a way that isn't listed, reach out and we'll help.
Try these first
- Put both AirPods in the case, wait 15 seconds, then open the lid near your iPhone.
- Make sure the case has charge and Bluetooth is on.
- Clean the mesh on each AirPod gently with a soft, dry brush.
- Check for a firmware update by keeping them charging near your connected iPhone.
Pairing & connection
If your AirPods won't connect or keep dropping out:
- Put both in the case, close it, wait 15 seconds, then open it next to your iPhone.
- On the iPhone, toggle Bluetooth off and on.
- Make sure they're selected as the audio output in Control Centre.
Switching between devices can confuse the connection. If they keep linking to the wrong device, we'll help you sort out how they hand off.
One side quiet or cutting out
When one AirPod is quiet, dead or cutting out, the usual causes are earwax or an audio-balance setting:
- Gently clean the speaker mesh on the quiet side with a soft, dry brush.
- Check Settings › Accessibility › Audio/Visual and centre the balance slider.
- Put both in the case to recharge — an uneven charge causes uneven volume.
If it persists after cleaning and a reset, tell us which side and when it happens so we can narrow it down.
Microphone issues
If people can't hear you clearly on calls:
- Clean the microphone openings gently — debris muffles your voice.
- Try setting the microphone to a specific AirPod instead of Automatic in the Bluetooth settings.
- Test with each AirPod alone to see whether one mic is the problem.
Still muffled? A reset often clears it. We'll guide you through the exact steps.
Charging & case
Charging problems usually sit with the case rather than the AirPods:
- Charge the case itself for at least 15 minutes before testing.
- Clean the case contacts and the base of each AirPod — grime blocks charging.
- For wireless charging, reseat the case on the pad; alignment matters.
Check the charge by opening the lid near your iPhone. If one AirPod never charges, tell us — the contacts or a reset are the usual fix.
Resetting your AirPods
A reset clears most stubborn AirPods problems and is completely safe:
- Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid for 30 seconds.
- Open the lid, then on your iPhone forget the AirPods under Bluetooth settings.
- Hold the button on the back of the case until the light flashes amber, then white.
- Re-pair by holding the open case next to your iPhone.
Not sure at which step it went wrong? We'll stay with you through each one.
Features & controls
Getting the most from features like noise control and automatic switching:
- Customise press-and-hold actions in Settings › Bluetooth › your AirPods.
- Toggle Automatic Ear Detection if playback pauses or resumes unexpectedly.
- Turn Automatic Switching on or off to control how they move between devices.
Tell us which model you have and what you'd like them to do, and we'll help you set it up.
